FAST VERSUS RIGHT
There are three ways to extract herbs into oils. Slow, Fast or RIGHT.
Process Optimization
HEAT
Virtually every botanical company produces their extracts quickly, with heat. There are many solvents (water, oils, etc) that can extract specific compounds from plant material. When you heat this solution up, you can extract a portion of these compounds quickly, often in hours. But what compounds are left behind? How much heat is too much or too little for any given plant material? How does a water extraction affect your product? Large producers need quick results, small producers generally do not have the expensive equipment to product bulk heat extraction.
MACERATION
Small batch companies often macerate their plant material in oils or water. This involves putting a measured amount of plant material and solvent into a jar or container and letting it set for months to slowly release and absorb the compounds. But you may lose the compounds that require heat to release. This also ties up your inventory for months.
THE OHO WAY
At OHO we use both maceration over time and heat.
First, we never use water as a solvent E very OHO product is anhydrous, meaning we have no moisture in our products that can cause mold, or spoilage.
We match the solvent oil to specific plants and recipes to insure proper extraction. Sunflower and Jojoba oils will have different extraction results.
We macerate every batch for three months. This removes all the maceration compounds.
We then slow heat for 24 hours to release the heat-related compounds.
We now have a comprehensive extraction of all available compounds from both maceration and heat, ready to blend into a specific formulation.
